🇹🇷 🇺🇦 On the topic of Radical Islamists in Donbas
There are Jihadists in Ukraine but many of them are Tatars and some are Chechens. Jihadists exist on both sides but Chechens mainly side with separatists while Tatars side with Ukrops. Balkan muslims are seen less predominantly.
In any case Turkey supports Jihadist militants in Ukraine but they're waiting for opportunities in Crimea should fighting start in Crimea, if war breaks out. Turkey mainly uses Tatar networks and fighters from Syria in Ukraine. Many of these Tatars joined Al Qaeda and various Syrian rebels then returned to Ukraine and set up networks there. Some analysts accuse Turkey of having plans to send additional Jihadists to link up with the Tatars in the event of war.
A lot of these Tatars went to Syria to fight Russia after Crimea joined the Russian Federation. Turkey considers Crimea their rightful territory and within it's sphere of influence, they want to kick the Russians out of Crimea and use the favor gained with the ukrainians in doing so to broker a deal to enable increased Turkish influence in Crimea. Whether that involves mainly Tatars or other Turkish proxies bolstered by their mercenaries seen in multiple recent conflicts.
