🇱🇺🇨🇻 Ana Correia da Veiga becomes Luxembourg's first African/black MP
Born in Luxembourg to immigrant parents from Cape Verde, Correia da Veiga has been politically active in Luxembourg since 2013 serving as a city councillor in the Luxembourg City's municipal council representing the far-left Déi Lénk (The Left) Party which formed as a merger between the former Communist Party of Luxembourg and the New Left.
The last parliamentary elections in the country were held in 2023 and Déi Lénk won a meager two seats. The party has a policy of rotating MPs so the previous holders stepped down and allowed Ana Correia da Veiga to become Luxembourg's first African MP.
Déi Lénk put Veiga at the top of the list during the 2024 Europarliamentary elections but the party didn't win any seats.
Besides advocating for traditional leftist issues like social justice and [lack of] housing, Déi Lénk also advocates for the abolition of the Luxembourgish monarchy and the transition to a republic.
