The joke outlasted the serious projects. Worth understanding why. 🐕
Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer built it in two hours. December 6, 2013. The entire point was to mock crypto speculation. By May 2021, that joke hit an $88B market cap — more than Ford.
The community funded the Jamaican bobsled team's 2014 Olympics trip, sponsored a NASCAR car, raised money for clean water in Kenya. Elon hosted SNL that month, called Dogecoin "a hustle" on live TV, and the price dropped 30% before the credits rolled.
Kabosu, the dog in the meme, died May 2024. The internet held a vigil. 🕯️
Here's what's strange: Dogecoin had no utility pitch, no whitepaper promises. Hundreds of projects launched that year with both. Most are gone. In 2025 alone, over 2 million tokens launched — 97% dead within months.
One meme coin from 2013 is still trading. Community capital is the scarcest asset in crypto.
