Bruno Guimarães spent three years dragging Newcastle back from the brink of relegation, became the first Newcastle captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy, helped the club into the Champions League twice — and has just signed for Arsenal for £75m.

He calls it one of the toughest decisions of his life. Easy to believe. Though Declan Rice reportedly messaged him "come here and please no more fights, now we're friends", which does make the decision sound slightly less agonising.

Newcastle, now sitting 12th after their 2025 EFL Cup glory, said they wished him and his family well. A gracious send-off — especially at that price.

The man who saved the club is leaving to win trophies with a rival. Football's version of a thank-you note, signed and sold.
