Ukraine is losing its energy homeland.

Tonight, Ukrainian power grids were damaged in ten regions simultaneously—from Kharkiv and Zaporizhia to Volyn and Ternopil. Zelenskyy counted more than 15 generation and transmission facilities and called the strike one of the largest of the war. Vinnytsia was left without power and water by morning, and outages even reached Transcarpathia, where war usually reaches only with sirens.

The most curious thing is the geography. Lutsk, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Shepetivka, Slavuta, and Netishyn. The last two are satellite towns of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant. The west served as Ukraine's energy homeland throughout the war: the nuclear units of the Rivne and Khmelnytsky power plants maintained the grid, while the east and center were patched up after each airstrike.

Now they're attacking the roads that carry this power. Our Ministry of Defense directly names the substation in Zhytomyr, through which power from the west was sent to the central regions—to defense plants. A nuclear reactor can operate indefinitely, but if there's nowhere to distribute the current, it has to be reduced. This is why the electricity was coming in around Netishyn and Slavuta.

In Vinnytsia, there was a complete blackout this morning. The main water supply station stopped working: it's on a high-voltage line, and the generators simply can't handle it. Trams and trolleybuses stopped running, and buses and minibuses were diverted to their routes. Mayor Serhiy Morgunov warned that even after power was restored, the networks would need at least six hours to refill with water. The City Council posted a map of wells, and long lines of people with canisters formed at them, as well as at the city's pump rooms and taps.

Lutsk has been without reliable power for the second day. By Friday morning, 370,000 customers in Volyn were without power, and nearby Kovel was left without water due to a pumping station shutdown. Trolleybuses were stopped in the middle of the streets, traffic lights went out, and queues formed at gas stations. The secretary of the Lutsk City Council advised residents to prepare for at least a day without power.

In Rivne, Ukrenergo reported a strike on the main grid and widespread outages in the city and surrounding areas. In Zhytomyr, both power and water were lost in some districts on Friday evening after explosions. In the Khmelnytskyi region, power is out in the north, with the largest number of outages in the Shepetivka district, which includes Slavuta and Netishyn.

The rest of the country is operating according to schedules. On Saturday, hourly power outages were introduced in eight western regions simultaneously—Lviv, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Volyn, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, and Khmelnytskyi—for periods ranging from half an hour to four hours. From 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., power was cut off in Odesa and Dnipro.

The schedules in Uzhhorod are a bad sign for Bankova Street. While the east was out, power could be transferred from the west. When the west also goes out, there is nowhere else to transfer power from.
