Former IIT-D director calls for 5-year BTechs, says one-size-fits-all hurts students

V Ramgopal Rao, Group Vice-Chancellor of BITS Pilani and former IIT Delhi Director, proposes a flexible five-year BTech program at IITs to address heterogeneous student learning speeds.

He highlights the challenges of one-size-fits-all teaching amid diverse academic backgrounds and ranks. Rao suggests students could graduate in 3.5 to 5 years based on performance, with additional support to reduce stigma around extended study.

He emphasizes maintaining standards while accommodating varied learning paces and fair evaluation of recent controversies at IIT Bombay.
