‼️ Cronos Halts Network After ~$75M Tectonic Exploit

💵 Cronos halted its chain on Sunday after lending protocol Tectonic suffered an exploit estimated at around $75M. The attack appears to have involved manipulating a thin-liquidity asset, pushing its price up roughly 100x in 20 minutes, then using the inflated value as collateral to borrow other assets.
😆 Around $6M was reportedly bridged to Ethereum before the network halt, while most of the funds remained on Cronos at the time of reporting.

⚠️ The incident raises another important DeFi question: when something goes wrong, users need more than an emergency stop. They need clear communication, a recovery plan, and visibility into what happens next.

😁 Bitcoin’s recent rally wiped out around $3B in leveraged shorts, while major firms including Abraxas, Fasanara and Wintermute were spotted holding hundreds of millions in short perps on Hyperliquid.

⌛ But there’s an important detail: these positions appear to be part of cash-and-carry basis trades. The firms hold spot while shorting roughly equivalent perpetual exposure, staying largely market-neutral while collecting funding.

💡 So seeing a huge short position doesn’t automatically mean someone is calling the top. Before following the “smart money”, check the other side of the trade.

⌛ Term Finance suffered an estimated $8.5M loss after an attacker reportedly gained governance control over its Meta Vaults and used proposals to drain funds.

The incident affected roughly 68% of the $12.45M held in the vault product, including nearly all of its ETH. Term Labs has since closed Meta Vaults to new deposits, removed DAO roles, and kept withdrawals open while investigating. Its core lending markets were reportedly not affected.

➡️ The bigger lesson here: smart contract security alone isn't enough. Governance is part of the attack surface too.

⚠️ $3.2B Liquidated as BTC & ETH Rip Higher

‼️ BTC pushed toward $72K while ETH climbed above $2.3K, but the move came with a brutal reminder for leveraged traders.

💥 Around $3.21B in positions were liquidated over 24 hours, with shorts taking roughly $2.95B of the hit. BTC and ETH accounted for the biggest share of the wipeout.

The U.S. Treasury has announced it will at least double the size of its liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated Treasuries, from a maximum of $2B to at least $4B per operation starting September 9.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Trump Media Reports $238M Loss as Crypto Holdings Decline

Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social, reported a record net loss of $238 million in Q2 - up sharply from $20 million in the same period last year.
The biggest factor wasn't operating costs, but non-cash losses of more than $190 million, largely tied to digital assets, collateral, and securities. During the first half of the year, the value of the company's Bitcoin and Cronos (CRO) holdings fell by more than 33%, contributing to a total crypto-related loss of around $361 million.

Despite the headline loss, the company continues to grow:

⌛ Total assets now stand at approximately $2 billion

The report is another reminder that holding digital assets on a corporate balance sheet can significantly impact financial results - even when no assets are sold. As more public companies adopt crypto treasury strategies, market volatility will continue to play a major role in quarterly earnings.

🔥🔥🔥 The CLARITY Act Is Becoming a National Security Debate

🌐 Former U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper is framing the CLARITY Act as more than financial regulation. His argument: gaps in crypto rules could be exploited by countries such as North Korea and China.

👀 Esper also sits on Coinbase’s advisory council, which is relevant context when considering his position.

But the bigger issue goes beyond politics: technology moves much faster than regulation. On-chain transactions happen and can be verified in real time. Regulation can take months or years to catch up.

As crypto becomes more integrated into global finance, the question is no longer whether clearer rules are coming, but whether those rules will actually reflect how blockchain markets work.
