🏛 CFTC BEGINS BUILDING A FEDERAL FRAMEWORK FOR LEVERAGED CRYPTO TRADING
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has opened a new rulemaking process for crypto markets.
The agency is seeking public comment on rules covering certain retail crypto transactions involving:
• Leverage
• Margin
• Financing
The proposal could also create a new regulated platform category specifically for crypto:
CRYPTO ASSET MARKETS
These venues would operate under a federal CFTC framework designed specifically for crypto transactions.
The CFTC says the rules would focus on areas including:
• Market manipulation
• Consumer protection
• Industry-specific compliance standards
• Federal market supervision
The comment period will remain open for:
60 DAYS
Important distinction:
These are NOT final regulations.
The CFTC has published an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking.
That means the agency is gathering information before deciding exactly what the final rules should look like.
Another important point:
Congress has still not passed a comprehensive U.S. crypto market-structure law.
So the CFTC is attempting to build this framework using authority it already has under existing commodities law.
For Bitcoin markets, this could matter most at the leveraged trading layer.
Spot BTC itself is decentralized.
The exchanges, brokers and financing systems built around it are becoming increasingly regulated.
