The ancient city of Myra in Demre, Antalya, Turkey, is famous for its cliffside Lycian high limestone walls and its connection to Saint Nicholas. The site includes a remarkably preserved theatre that could hold roughly 10,000 spectators.
• The Lycians believed that souls were carried to the afterlife by winged creature-like spirits, so placing their dead high up on cliffs brought them closer to the heavens. Myra features two main zones—the river necropolis and the ocean necropolis—filled with both flat and embossed carvings depicting family members and mythological scenes.
Saint Nicholas served as the bishop of Myra during the 4th century AD and later became the historical inspiration for Santa Claus. Just off the coast of Demre lies the underwater ruins of Kekova, a Lycian settlement.
