🐄 What Is the “Cow” in Your Life?
● The longest chapter of the Qur’an is called Surat al-Baqarah—“The Cow.”
📌 At first, the name may seem surprising!
The Surah contains profound teachings about faith, worship, family, society, justice, transactions, and human responsibility.
👀 Why, then, is it named after a cow?
The story of the cow is not merely about an ancient incident among the Children of Israel.
🍃 It reveals a deeply human psychological pattern: the tendency to negotiate with a clear command instead of simply responding with obedience.
💫 When a murder occurred among the Children of Israel, Allah commanded Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) to tell them to slaughter a cow.
🪧 Instead of responding with immediate obedience, they began asking questions:
⁉️ What kind of cow?
⁉️ How old should it be?
⁉️ What color?
⭕️ With every additional question, the command became more difficult to fulfil.
📌 The Qur’an presents this story as a lesson in how excessive questioning can become a means of delaying obedience!
🔖 The problem was not the cow itself; it was the attitude of the heart.
📍This is particularly striking because the Children of Israel had witnessed immense divine blessings.
🌟 Allah had delivered them from Pharaoh, parted the sea for them, shaded them with clouds, and provided them with manna and quails.
💥 Yet they repeatedly struggled with gratitude, obedience, and surrender.
📩 The story therefore becomes a mirror for our own lives:
What is your “cow”?
🔎 Perhaps it is a command from Allah that you already know is right, but keep postponing.
🔎 Perhaps you repeatedly promise repentance when facing a crisis, only to return to the same mistake once the hardship disappears.
🔎 Perhaps the Qur’an has been replaced in your daily life by endless scrolling, short videos, and distractions.
🔎 Perhaps you seek religious knowledge not always to obey more faithfully, but sometimes to find an excuse to delay what you already know you should do.
🖇 Knowledge is precious, and sincere questions are part of faith.
❗️But there is a difference between asking in order to understand and questioning in order to escape responsibility.
🌟 Sometimes the greatest spiritual breakthrough is not discovering another answer, but finally acting upon the answer we already know.
🔥 So sit honestly with yourself and ask:
What is the “cow” in my life—the clear command of Allah that I keep negotiating with instead of obeying?
⚠️ The longer we negotiate with obedience, the heavier obedience can become!!
