From the "Philosophical Parables" column
Once, one of Pavlov’s graduate students was conditioning a salivary reflex in dogs to Nikolay Baskov’s song "Natural Blonde."
However, he didn't know that sleep is required for information consolidation, nor did he know that it is precisely during sleep that the brain switches to servicing the digestive organs.
Therefore, whenever the dogs would fall asleep at the very first notes sung by Baskov, the graduate student would start waking them up, trying every which way to convince them to produce gastric juice.
It wasn't working out very well; so the graduate student falsified the data, and Pavlov received the Nobel Prize for his research on conditioned reflexes.
A banquet was announced on this occasion, and Baskov was invited to sing.
Pavlov fell asleep while listening to these sounds because he was exhausted from a day of mental work and his brain needed rest; but later, in one of his lectures, he said:
"There are three categories of people. Some cannot stop eating even when listening to a singer's performance. Others develop a digestive response immediately after the performance. And for the third category—the most intellectual—even such a mental exercise does not stimulate an appetite, and they go to the laboratory to work."
