My morning YouTube routine has turned into an unintended comedy of "consciousness experts."
Today’s episode featured neuroscientist Christof Koch bringing up the famous blue/gold dress illusion, trying to tie it into a grand unified theory of human consciousness. The logic just wasn't there.
It feels like every week someone new rushes to solve a "mystery" that philosophy addressed hundreds of years ago.
Kant already showed us that our perception dictates how the "physical world" appears to us. Consciousness isn't a secret physical object to be discovered—it’s the mechanism through which reality is perceived in the first place.
Instead of reinventing the wheel with shallow takes on social media, maybe it's time these commentators actually engage with foundational epistemology and the literature on perception.
Less amateur hot takes, more rigor, please.
