🇵🇭🇨🇳 Chinese Teachers Leave Philippines
Philippine Chinese education groups are arranging the return of about 150 Chinese volunteer and dispatched teachers from Chinese-language schools across the Philippines, citing security concerns. According to reports on the move, departures were organized in batches from October 1 after the groups informed the Chinese embassy in Manila and relevant Chinese authorities.
The decision followed public criticism of local Chinese-language education by SeaLight Initiative head Ray Powell and Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, which raised safety concerns among teachers’ families. Organizers said the move was made by the institutions that invited the teachers, not through expulsion by the Philippine government or a recall by China; the country has around 130 to 150 Chinese-language schools, where dispatched teachers are a key staffing supplement.
Schools facing teacher shortages are shifting temporarily to online Chinese classes, substitute instructors, or other coursework while longer-term plans are prepared.
