🇹🇼🇨🇳 Taiwan contests WW2 narrative

Taiwan has pushed back after Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump highlighted a wartime US-China alliance at their Washington summit last week. According to reporting by The Straits Times, Taipei is concerned Washington could be swayed by Beijing’s account of World War Two, potentially affecting support from Taiwan’s main arms supplier.

Taipei says Beijing’s version is distorted because the Republic of China government, which now governs Taiwan, was the authority that fought alongside the Allies during the war. After losing the civil war in 1949, the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan, while the People’s Republic of China later built an official narrative that casts communist guerrilla forces as the backbone of resistance and gives limited recognition to Republican forces.

A White House fact sheet said Trump and Xi recalled that the US and China were allies in World War Two and fought side by side. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said it will continue communicating with the US to press its historical position.
