Islamic countries did not have hijab previous to seemingly synchronized events in relatively recent years. It is not in their religious beliefs. Only in 1979, after the Revolution, did Iranian women have to cover themselves. Then on Dec 2024 the "Law on Protecting the Family through the Promotion of the Culture of Chastity and Hijab" passed. This law intensifies the enforcement of compulsory hijab and imposes severe penalties for violations, including fines, imprisonment, and flogging. Did you know that in 1953 the CIA orchestrated a coup that overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and reinstated the Shah? During the Pahlavi dynasty, which ruled from the 1920s to the 1970s, there was a push towards modernization and Westernization, and the wearing of headscarves was not enforced by law. Women in Arabia at the time of Muhammad had a vast diversity in their dress- head covering was never mandatory. At that time, though, many Christian and Jewish women would cover their heads because of their religious beliefs.... Only in recent years in Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Egypt, Turkey, Afghanistan, etc., did women start wearing hijab- only after 1975, the Salafist movement.
