Thomas Edison used carbonized bamboo filaments to create the first commercially practical, long-lasting incandescent light bulb.
Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on Earth. While typical peak rates hover around 91 cm per day, a species known as Madake in Japan set an extreme record by growing 121 cm (47.6 inches) in a single 24-hour day. Unlike most plants that grow through slow cell division, bamboo already has its cells formed underground before the shoot emerges. These pre-formed cells rapidly inflate with water and sugars, stretching upward like an expanding telescope or an accordion. Because the stem is hollow and light, the plant does not waste energy building a heavy, solid trunk.
