🇬🇧 HMS Agamemnon, the Royal Navy's newest hunter-killer submarine, has sailed from Barrow-in-Furness for the first time to begin sea trials.

The sixth of seven Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs), HMS Agamemnon left BAE Systems' shipyard on September 25, 2026, marking a major step toward frontline service with the Royal Navy at HM Naval Base Clyde.

The 97-metre, 7,400-tonne submarine is the largest and most advanced attack submarine ever operated by the Royal Navy. Powered by a Rolls-Royce nuclear reactor, it will never need refuelling during its service life. Its high-tech capabilities include stealthy precision strike, anti-submarine warfare, and intelligence gathering.

HMS Agamemnon is armed with Tomahawk IV land-attack missiles capable of striking targets more than 1,000 miles away, alongside Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes. Its mission will be to safeguard the submarines carrying Britain's nuclear deterrent from adversary interference, as well as to project power by attacking land targets, engaging hostile submarines and warships, and supporting Royal Marines raids.
