❗️A top mathematician warns against sharing original ideas with ChatGPT
Tristan Buckmaster still uses AI tools but says he no longer shares his original research ideas with OpenAI or Anthropic.
His concern grew after OpenAI published 722 mathematical manuscripts covering 372 families of results, generated using an experimental model unavailable to outside researchers. He fears young mathematicians could see years of work overtaken overnight.
He also warns that grant reviewers sometimes upload research proposals to AI tools, potentially exposing confidential ideas.
OpenAI denies misusing user data, and there’s no proof it took Buckmaster’s work.
His warning: the AI helping you make a breakthrough could belong to a company racing to make that breakthrough first.
