Cymatics is a branch of physics that studies how sound and vibration interact with matter.

In the worldview of the Shipibo-Conibo people, the universe is a song, and every element has a pattern that can be sung.

Ícaros are songs, transmissions, and forms of knowledge passed down from generation to generation, kept alive through singing and through Kené.

In Kené, each design is composed of interwoven lines that create pathways and journeys, traditionally woven, embroidered, or painted.

From this worldview, design is the visible manifestation of song.

In other words, what is sung as an ícaro can be perceived as a pattern, and that pattern can then be woven or embroidered.

Some artisans describe “seeing” these designs during states of deep connection (dreams, fasting, ceremonies), in much the same way that healers and shamans “receive” ícaros.

Like many other Amazonian tribes, the Shipibo do not distinguish between seeing and hearing: they listen with their eyes and see with their ears.

For this reason, their designs are considered visual music, expressed through Kené.
Kené is that very song made visible.

What is sung can be seen, and what is seen can be sung.

This song, in the voice of Herlinda Agustín, is part of the documentary The Painted Songs of the Amazon.

Her voice, in dialogue with a resonant and continuous sound field, observed through a cymascope, reveals visible patterns sustained in water.

Different languages pointing in the same direction: vibration organizing, remembering, aligning, and reorganizing.

Sounds that weave networks,
networks that, instead of trapping, create bonds, unite, and connect.
