🇲🇦🇪🇸 Morocco puts migration cooperation with Spain at stake ahead of 29 November election
Morocco’s King Mohammed VI said on 9 October that Rabat’s migration partnership with Madrid had reached its limits, putting border cooperation on the table as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez campaigns to stay in office in the 29 November election. The move comes after more than 80,000 people crossed into Ceuta on 30 and 31 July, while opposition Partido Popular leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has made the issue central to his campaign, with polls putting PP on 31.9% against 28.1% for Sánchez’s PSOE.
Sánchez has called for a permanent Frontex mission in Ceuta and for Ceuta and Melilla to join the EU Customs Union as overseas territories, angering Rabat, which claims both enclaves. Spain’s shift in March 2022 to back Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara also strained ties with Algeria, ahead of a 20-21 October Madrid summit between President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Sánchez expected to address gas supplies via the Medgaz pipeline.
