🇪🇹 Ethiopian president warns of external interference as fighting resumes in Tigray

Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie told the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday that external actors were behind renewed fighting in the northern Tigray region, in remarks seen as directed at Egypt and Eritrea. The latest clashes involve Ethiopian federal troops and fighters loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, after the TPLF and six other opposition groups last week announced an alliance to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party.

The fighting has shattered the 2022 African Union-brokered peace pact that ended a two-year war in Tigray in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed. The UN and the European Union have called for restraint and a return to the peace process.
