🇳🇬 Nigeria appoints 10-member panel to probe deaths of 37 miners in NSCDC holding cell

Nigeria has appointed a 10-member independent panel to investigate the deaths of 37 young men found dead on 18 September in a crowded Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps holding cell in Minna, the capital of Niger state, after they were arrested on suspicion of illegal gold mining. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said on 20 September that the panel has two weeks to submit a report determining responsibility, complicity, negligence and misconduct.

President Bola Tinubu on 19 September ordered an urgent full and transparent investigation. Tunji-Ojo said 20 NSCDC officers and guards involved in the arrests and detention had been suspended, while their boss was suspended on 19 September.
