🇨🇩 DR Congo launches Ebola vaccination campaign for frontline workers in Ituri
The Democratic Republic of Congo began vaccinating healthcare workers against Ebola on 20 September in Bunia, the epicentre of the country’s fastest-growing outbreak. Authorities are prioritising frontline staff for the Ervebo vaccine under a compassionate-use programme, with the rollout targeting Bunia and Mongbwalu in Ituri province. As of Saturday, the country had recorded 7,541 confirmed cases, including 3,639 deaths.
The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which has no licensed vaccine or treatment. The World Health Organization said last month that 70,000 doses of Ervebo had been approved for use in Congo, including 50,000 for frontline and health workers and 20,000 for a clinical trial on protection against Bundibugyo Ebola.
