Livre de Chevalerie
(Book of Chivalry)

Written by Geoffroi de Charny in the 1300's AD. It is one of the main books of the period that tries to describe chivalry. It's been translated into English by Elspeth Kennedy and can be found in a couple of different editions with introductory text by Richard W. Kaeuper.

Geoffroi was a knight who was considered in his time to be a great example of knighthood.

Modern morality, Lewis claims, has become utilitarian and equalizing in ways that flatten distinctions of honor, loyalty, and nobility of spirit.

Chivalry is not merely medieval costume but a moral grammar; a set of virtues (courage, courtesy, loyalty, honor, magnanimity) that shape personal conduct and social imagination.

Over the next few days I will share some of the best historical and fictional books about knights and chivalry.

C.S. Lewis - Present Concerns
A Collection of Essays

“The Knight is a man of blood and iron, familiar with the sight of smashed faces and the ragged stumps of lopped-off limbs. He is also demure, almost maiden-like, when a guest in hall; a gentle, modest, unobtrusive man. He is not a compromise or a happy mean between ferocity and meekness; he is fierce to the nth and meek to the nth.”

When a man can't find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure.

Viktor Frankl

Pleasure alone cannot fill the emptiness of life without purpose. True fulfillment comes from finding meaning, even in struggle. Pleasure may distract us, but meaning sustains us.

🏛 Civilization: A Personal View

You should watch Kenneth Clark’s widely praised Civilisation. It’s a 13-part BBC series (first screened in 1969) where Clark gives a personal view of Western art, history and ideas.

Lord Clark wanted to remind his audience what Western Civilization was really all about and why it should be preserved.

I wanted to create a separate channel for it, but someone has already took care of that.

Triumph of the Mediocre

"I marvel at the placidity of the Utopian who imagines that man is perfectible. There is no denying that the human creature is born selfish, abusive, vile. Just look around you and see. Society cynical and ferocious, the humble heckled and pillaged by the rich traffickers in necessities.

Everywhere the triumph of the mediocre and unscrupulous, everywhere the apotheosis of crooked politics and finance. And you think you can make any
progress against a stream like that? No, man has never changed. His soul was corrupt in the days of Genesis and is not less rotten at present. Only the form of his sins varies. Progress is the hypocrisy which refines the vices."

Light in the DarkViolin Sky
...And when we die, is there a happier world? Knowledge is hidden from us in darkness and clouds. Since we cannot know another form of life, and since the world of the dead is a mystery, it seems we must blindly cherish our own small ray of light, for whatever it is worth, and pursue our foolish path through tales.

The #Matrix

If our world is a computer-generated Matrix, then everything is illusory, and we must battle the laws of creation to attain freedom. However, if a wise act of creation lies behind our world, we must understand those laws. by honoring them, we can reach the truth that transcends this world.

Ultimately, the degree of reality attributed to our world and lives matters less than what lies hidden behind that reality. From this perspective, freedom arises from honoring the laws of creation, not from constructing illusions (ideologies, escapism, etc) that stand in endless conflict with creation, nature, humanity and faith, as occurs within the Matrix.

Forwarded from J.R.R. Tolkien

“Thank you, Sam," he said in a cracked whisper. "How far is there to go?"

I don't know," said Sam, "because I don't know where we're going.”

🎬 Film Critic David Thomson is not Convinced by Christopher Nolan’s Latest Epic

...I don't think Nolan is very good at telling coherent stories or even knowing what they're about.

...I think it's a bad film, from an essentially uninteresting director.
