🎨 Ary Scheffer (1795–1858)
This dramatic 1854 painting presents one of the most psychologically intense moments in the New Testament—the Devil’s final temptation of Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:8–10).
Christ stands barefoot on the precipice of a mountain, clad in a flowing robe of soft rose and white, his figure serene and radiant. A faint golden halo encircles his head—a quiet, subtle symbol of his divinity rather than an overwhelming proclamation. His right hand is lifted in a gentle, dismissive gesture, while his left rests gracefully on his abdomen. His posture is relaxed, but resolute. He does not speak. He does not flinch. He simply refuses.
To his right, clinging like a shadow, is Satan—depicted not as a monstrous beast but as a dark-winged man, muscular and human-like, with deep-set eyes and a twisted, cunning expression.
