What are ergative verbs and how to use them

These are verbs that have a passive meaning but are used in the active form. The verbs are sell, cut, read, clean, download, wear and improve, cook.

The shop sells well online. — Этот товар хорошо продаётся в интернете.
The book reads easily. — Эта книга легко читается.
This shirt washes well. — Эта рубашка хорошо стирается.
These shoes wear well. — Эта обувь хорошо носится.
The price cuts easily. — Цена легко снижается.
The file downloads quickly. — Файл быстро скачивается.
The situation is improving. — Ситуация улучшается. / Ситуация становится лучше.

Of course, these verbs can also be used in the passive voice when you want to emphasise that somebody or something performs the action.

The new collection is sold in over 50 countries.
Новая коллекция продаётся более чем в 50 странах.
The book is widely read by university students.
Эту книгу широко читают студенты университетов.
The floors are cleaned every morning.
Полы убирают каждое утро.
These trainers are worn by professional athletes.
