The little structure labeled “Admiral Dog!” (along with the other dog-ish shapes like the Dog-Fish, Pig-Snail, etc.) from the original 2015 Google DeepDream work is among the earliest widely seen AI-generated / AI-hallucinated dog images.Why it counts as one of the first:DeepDream was released in June/July 2015.
These small feature-visualization images were some of the first public examples Google showed of what the network was “seeing.”
Because the Inception network had been trained on ImageNet (which was packed with dog breeds), the strongest patterns it amplified were canine. So dog-like faces and hybrid creatures appeared very early and very prominently.
Before this, pure generative models (early GANs from 2014) existed, but they mostly produced blurry faces or simple objects and weren’t publicly flooding the internet with recognizable dogs the way DeepDream did.
