Milk without a cow is already being sold in the US. 🥛
Bored Cow uses Perfect Day whey protein, produced through fermentation using a genetically engineered microorganism rather than taking the protein from an actual cow. The resulting whey protein is intended to be molecularly identical to conventional dairy whey.
And here’s the part worth paying attention to: the carton can be marketed as “animal free”, while the allergen statement still says “contains milk” because the protein is considered a milk protein.
The FDA has reviewed the safety of this type of precision-fermentation-derived whey, and products are already reaching consumers.
Whether you think this is the future of food or something you’d rather avoid, the label matters.
Don’t just look at the big words on the front of the carton. Turn it around and see exactly what you’re buying. 👀🥛
