What is blockchain?

Blockchain is the most basic layer of the crypto infrastructure and is the basement everything is built on.

Actually, it’s pretty simple. What is it?

Blockchain is a big ledger. Big database. It keeps information, just as any other database. And what is the biggest information storage in the world? It is the web.

There are a lot of applications online. Social networks, messengers, banks, games, image storages etc. We all use them everyday and from the inception of internet era we had to rely on the centralized databases. If you use Facebook there is only one entity that has control over your data. Same about YouTube or any other application. Including banks.

All of your financial data is reliant on very complicated and uneffective bank databases. More than that, they are non transparent, centralised and can't be easily integrated into each other.

What is blockchain? - Just a big database that exists in the web, but it is no usual storage. It doesn't belong to anyone. You can join, you can use it, build on it. It is basically just a safe place to create whatever you want. And you can be sure that everyone else that joins will play by the same rules. This is decentralisation.

If you are creating an on-chain defi app, you and your customers can be sure that your network will never be shut down because of some error. And everyone knows that you cant take their money if you just want to. Because the app is yours, but the network is not. And everyone knows how and where money is used. Thats transparency.

More than that - anyone can integrate your app without permission. Because its based on a public decentralized database. You just put your comission or whatever you prefer. And anyone is free to use your application inside of theirs. That's permissionless.
