📮❌ Today, Denmark's postal service will deliver its last physical letter

After 400 years of tradition, the Danish postal service PostNord, responsible for delivering written correspondence since 1624, will deliver the final letter on December 30th and will no longer offer this service due to a sharp decline in demand for letters. Over the past 25 years, the volume of physical letters in Denmark has dropped by more than 90%.

The acceptance of the last business letters, direct mail, and magazine subscriptions ended on December 18, 2025; the last priority and registered letters, as well as letters with return receipts, were accepted yesterday.

Earlier this year, the company announced it would cut 1,500 jobs and dismantle 1,500 red postboxes due to increasing societal digitization and the growth of online commerce. As a result, PostNord will now focus solely on parcel delivery.

1,000 of the dismantled postboxes were immediately sold, and another 200 will be auctioned in January.

Mass digitization is killing postal services across Europe: Germany's Deutsche Post is cutting 8,000 jobs to reduce costs, and the UK's Royal Mail plans to deliver letters only on weekdays to save money.

An entire historical period is ending. Philately is gradually dying, and along with physical letters and postcards sent by mail, the warm and tender emotions that digital can never replace are fading into the past.
