🟥 Lecture in Persian. closed captions (CC) and auto-translate are available.
summary:
In this session, we discussed the relationship between human action, the laws of nature, and the system of cause and effect. We also examined the nature of human action from the perspective of Islamic theologians (mutakallimūn).
We began a detailed discussion of the meaning of taklīf (moral/religious obligation) from the perspective of the theologians and the conditions required for it. We also discussed the concept of the rational person and the relationship between taklīf and the existence of reason in human beings, as well as the meaning of rational obligations (takālīf ʿaqlī).
We further considered the question of whether, from the perspective of the theologians, it is permissible to impose an obligation on a person whom God knows will ultimately be an unbeliever.
Finally, we discussed how these debates affect jurists’ understanding of the Sharīʿa and of religious/legal obligation.
