Japanese giant salamander – the rhino of the amphibian world 🦏
Like a rhino, the giant salamander has poor eyesight. But thanks to its enormous size, that’s not much of an issue. Especially since this amphibian can detect the slightest environmental vibrations through sensory cells covering its skin.
The largest specimen found in the wild weighed 26.3 kg and measured 136 cm in length. The longest recorded lifespan of a Japanese giant salamander is 55 years. Unfortunately, another parallel exists between the salamander and the rhino—both species are endangered.
