Ok so I guess entrapment was the proper legal term for my theory that the NFA rule changes were made with the intention of flipping the switch later on and then going after everyone who bought or made NFA items between now and then, just it is a different kind of entrapment.
William Kirk, a big 2A legal expert, had the same theory I had, that none of these NFA changes are permanent and can be totally reversed later on. He referred to the possibility of them doing this as entrapment by estoppel, which I guess is a type of entrapment and has been recognized as such by the courts.
That said it's not likely that as soon as they reverse the rule change right out the gate they will start coming after everyone who bought NFA items without going through the proper ATF channels, but what I certainly could see them do once they regain congress and the white house is they jack up the NFA tax to like a thousand dollars or some insane number like that, create some grace period and demand EVERYONE who bought an NFA item between the rule change and the rule change reversal to pay $1,000 per item, or become felons.
And keep in mind, if between now and then you bought an NFA item through normal 4473 channels at a gun store, the ATF could easily go to that gun store later on. They could wait until the grace period ends, of course compliance would be low, then they could go to the gun store, see that the item you bought was an NFA item and that you didn't go through proper NFA channels for it and didn't register it during the grace period, now you're a felon and could have your door kicked down and dog shot.
