✉️ P2P "triangle scheme": how to avoid being scammed
GMGM!
Today, we'll examine how to protect yourself from a popular P2P trading scam known as the "triangle scheme".
🐍 The scheme: a scammer manipulates two participants — a P2P trader and a victim (buyer) who has no connection to crypto trading. As a result, the victim loses money, and the trader becomes a fraud suspect.
💱 Step-by-step breakdown of the "triangle"
1. The scammer finds a victim by offering to sell goods/services at an attractive price;
2. Then finds a P2P trader and arranges to purchase cryptocurrency for the same amount;
3. After receiving the trader's payment details, forwards them to the victim;
4. The victim transfers money to the trader, thinking they're paying for goods/services;
5. The trader sends cryptocurrency to the scammer, unaware of who actually sent the money;
6. The scammer disappears with the cryptocurrency, while the trader whose details were used in the scheme becomes a fraud suspect.
🛡 How to protect yourself from the "triangle"
• Verify traders on P2P exchange, check account age and rating, transaction history and volumes. The greater the volume of trades and the higher the percentage of successful trades, the greater the trust in the trader;
• Reject transactions with third-party payments, specify this in your order terms;
• Request a payment screenshot showing both the bot deal and bank app receipt using smartphone's multitasking mode;
• Ask for a video recording of the transfer or to include the deal number in the payment comment;
• Cancel the deal at the slightest suspicion.
