📍 Amazingly, Katalin Kariko defied all these odds.
She managed to make discoveries under immense pressure.
She worked against the mainstream and norms of academia.
In 2020, her citation was ONLY ~ 13,000 !
She was an adjunct professor since 1990 at UPenn.
She NEVER got a tenure:
“Prior to her winning the Nobel Prize, [her university] had demoted her, cut her pay, and described Karikó as "not of faculty quality". She was never granted tenure.” [wiki]
Her life as a scientist who’s done stellar research despite astonishing setbacks is deeply motivating for some of us.
For others - it’s frightening.
Because her story acts as a magnifying glass.
It shows how today's academia makes pursuing science so difficult.
