Tissue regeneration refers to the capacity of tissues to restore structure and function after injury and is classically categorized based on cell-cycle activity, degree of differentiation, and presence of stem cells.
Labile tissues:
Continuously proliferating tissues with abundant stem cells; exhibit rapid and effective regeneration
(e.g., skin, gastrointestinal epithelium)
Stable tissues:
Quiescent (G0) under normal conditions but capable of proliferation following injury; regeneration mainly via mature cells
(e.g., liver)
Permanent tissues:
Terminally differentiated cells with minimal or no proliferative capacity; injury typically results in fibrosis rather than true regeneration
(e.g., neurons, cardiac muscle)
