When should you really announce your new job on LinkedIn? A practical guide

Many people rush to post about their new role on Day 1. But timing your LinkedIn update isn’t just about excitement - it’s about strategy, risk, and your professional signal.

Here’s what our Vero from the Talent Team says about how to think it through step-by-step:

1️⃣First things first: Do you even use LinkedIn?
If not - relax. No pressure. But if your profile is active and your previous roles are listed, social expectations kick in. Your new company (and future recruiters) will notice whether or not you’ve updated your status.
Companies might wonder: “Why hasn’t this person listed us yet?”

➡️True story: a recruiter once double-checked if someone had actually joined because they hadn’t updated their profile weeks after starting.

2️⃣Understand the risks of posting too early
Even if you’re happy to share your news, here’s what might go wrong:
You could part ways with the company before the probation period ends.

A short-lived role on your profile - even if deleted later - stays in people's memory (especially recruiters’).
It can send the wrong signal about your stability or fit.

3️⃣ So… when is the right time? Use this 3-point checklist:
✅ You genuinely like the company: the people, the tasks, the vibe.
✅ You’re hitting your goals: no negative feedback, you're confident in your results.
✅ The company is happy with you: you’ve either received positive feedback or asked for it directly.

➡️ Pro tip: Ask your manager how they feel about your performance. Transparency goes a long way.

4️⃣Timing recommendations:
Week 1–2:
Too early. You’re onboarding, not delivering yet.
Week 4: Maybe - if results are visible and feedback is solid.
Week 6–8: Ideal window. You’ve adapted, delivered, and confirmed mutual fit.
After probation: Safest choice if you prefer peace of mind.

Unless your role is public-facing (e.g., HR, sales, brand rep), you don’t need to rush. And if there’s pressure - have an honest conversation with your team.

➡️ Bottom line:
Your job update is more than just a brag - it’s a public signal.
Make sure it’s the right signal, at the right time.

What would you do - post on Day 1 or wait it out?
