What Is BTCFi?

BTCFi = Bitcoin + DeFi. Instead of only HODLing BTC, BTCFi lets you lend, borrow, trade, and issue assets using Bitcoin or layers tied to Bitcoin, without moving everything to Ethereum.

Here’s what that actually means:

What’s BTCFi? It’s decentralized finance built for Bitcoin (or on Bitcoin-connected layers). Think lending, DEXes, stablecoins, and token issuance that use BTC as the base asset — enabled by sidechains, L2s, and protocol bridges.

How Does It Work?
▫️Lightning Network: Fast, cheap BTC payments and rails for higher-volume transfers (not smart contracts, but foundational).
▫️Sidechains (RSK, Liquid): Peg BTC to a smart-contract-capable chain (RBTC, etc.) so Solidity-like apps can run while settling to Bitcoin.
▫️Stacks (Proof-of-Transfer): A separate chain that settles on Bitcoin and runs Clarity smart contracts (Stacking lets STX holders earn BTC).
▫️Taproot Assets / Lightning token rails: Issue tokens (including stablecoins) that move on Bitcoin-native rails for speed and settlement.
▫️Bridges & integrations: Protocols like LayerZero and Meson help move liquidity and messages between Bitcoin layers and other chains.

But There Are Limits

❗️Bridging, composability, and differing trust models create UX and security tradeoffs.
❗️Many apps still depend on new tech that has unique risks compared with mature Ethereum DeFi.
