Ticks and fleas repellent and removal herb blends for cats and dogs
When it comes to protecting cats and dogs from ticks and fleas, three essential oils stand out: cedarwood, rosemary, and lemongrass. To apply, mix 3 drops total of essential oils—1 drop of each—into 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil like coconut or castor oil. Stir well, then rub a small amount between your hands and gently apply it to the back of your pet’s neck. If you only have rosemary oil on hand, 3–10 drops (depending on your pet’s size) can be used safely.
This blend—or rosemary oil alone—is especially helpful if a tick has already latched on. When applied directly, the oil often causes the tick to release immediately, minimizing the risk of it injecting harmful substances. This makes removal much safer. Always use tweezers to gently pull the tick out whole, ensuring the head doesn’t break off. Keep a paper towel nearby to place the tick on and quickly crush it—this prevents unnecessary suffering and stops it from spreading or laying eggs indoors. You can also check the tick’s size later for monitoring purposes. We usually do.
The same method works effectively for fleas too.
We choose not to support Amazon directly, as we’re aware of its ties to broader systemic issues. However, we sometimes use the platform solely to identify the brand or company selling a specific oil blend or product, then purchase directly from the company’s official website.
We strongly encourage others to avoid supporting large corporations that contribute to many of the challenges we face today—opting instead for ethical, direct sourcing whenever possible.
