MALE donovan.nature
The intense coloration of males is not just an aesthetic feature. In many birds, striking colorations can act as visual signals during sexual selection, allowing females to evaluate potential mates.
A more showy plumage can indicate good physical condition and the ability to maintain those pigments and feather structures. Thus, coloration can become a reproductive advantage: males compete to attract.
