🇷🇺Russian private military companies have become a defining instrument of Moscow’s modern power projection. The Wagner Group operated in the grey zone between state policy and deniable force, emerging prominently in Syria before expanding into parts of Africa including the Central African Republic, Mali, Libya and Sudan. Their roles have included counterinsurgency support, regime stabilisation, training local forces, strategic infrastructure security and resource-linked security arrangements.
Functioning as force multipliers, they enabled influence without formal occupation and projection without official attribution.
Following restructuring, elements have been reorganised under the Africa Corps, reflecting tighter state alignment while retaining expeditionary flexibility.
In today’s multipolar battlespace, such formations illustrate the evolution of proxy warfare and hybrid statecraft.
