On15 March 1954, by decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 438-194, the SU-122-54 self-propelled artillery system was adopted into service with the Soviet Army. Its design made maximum use of components and assemblies from the T-54 medium tank.
The SU-122-54 self-propelled gun belonged to the class of fully enclosed SPGs with a front-mounted fighting compartment and a rear-mounted engine-transmission compartment. The driver’s compartment was combined with the fighting compartment, allowing all five crew members to communicate freely.
The vehicle’s main armament was the 122-mm rifled D-49 gun, while the secondary armament consisted of two 14.5-mm Vladimirov machine guns (KPVT).
Serial production was carried out in small batches, with the total number produced reaching about 100 vehicles.
In 1960s, some SU-122-54 self-propelled guns were converted into medium armored tractors, and later in the 1980s into BMR-1 mine-clearing vehicles.
