14 January 1974, by Order of the USSR Minister of Defense No. 10, the BTR-D, an amphibious tracked armored personnel carrier, was adopted into service with the Soviet Army for the Airborne Forces.

Based on the BTR-D armored personnel carrier, the following variants were developed:

• BMD-1KSh “Sinitsa” battalion-level command and staff vehicle.

• “Soroka” brigade/regimental-level command and staff vehicle.

• 1V119 “Reostat” artillery command and fire-control vehicle.

• 2S9 “Nona” 120-mm tracked self-propelled artillery system.

• armored carrier for transporting crews of the Strela-3 surface-to-air missile system.

• BREM-D armored recovery and repair vehicle.

• “Fos” satellite communications station.

• and the anti-tank variant BTR-RD “Robot.”
