The developed SKB‑129, which later received the name “Malyutka,” had to implement numerous innovations to ensure that, while meeting the required combat performance, the missile’s launch weight remained within acceptable limits.

Operating the “Malyutka” required an experienced operator. In combat, the operator observes the missile’s flight and guides it (not just keeping a crosshair on the target like today, but actively controlling the missile itself using a joystick on the control panel). If the target is less than 1,000 m away, the operator aims the “Malyutka” by sight. At longer distances, an 8× optical sight is used. This is aided by the clearly visible tracer on the missile’s tail.

The system’s first major combat use was during the 1973 Arab-Israeli conflict. The “Malyutka” continues to be used in conflicts around the world to this day.
