IDAHO FARMER WARNS WATER SHUTOFF COULD DESTROY HALF A MILLION ACRES OF FARMLAND
Fifth-generation Idaho farmer Trevor Belknap warns that a state water curtailment order affecting roughly 500,000 acres and 6,400 water users could devastate agriculture in eastern Idaho. He says farmers have already spent thousands of dollars per acre planting crops, with potatoes costing up to $4,000 an acre to grow. “Without water, the land doesn't have any value here,” Belknap says, warning that the impact could spread to banks, businesses, schools and local services.
