A pristine white rose traditionally symbolizes purity, honor, and loyalty. But a sad white rose is one that has been left out in the elements for too long, its edges turning a bruised, ash-gray. Wells is typically the person people rely on—the foundational stone, the "well" of strength. His sadness is tragic because it is quiet. He doesn't complain; he simply fades. The vibrant life drains from him from the inside out, leaving behind a beautiful but hollow shell of the protector he used to be like a rose that refuses to drop its petals even after it has died on the vine, Wells holds himself together out of pure duty. He bears his grief invisibly, standing perfectly straight, preferring to turn to stone rather than let the world see him break or bend.
