The silence of the Kazakh steppe is different from any other silence. It’s heavy, almost loud. Last August, that silence was broken by the sharp hiss of my bicycle tire. I was 40 kilometers away from the nearest village, with no tool kit, no cellular service, and a sun that seemed determined to melt my helmet.
Honestly, at that moment, I wasn't thinking about "leadership" or "resilience." I was just thinking about how much I hated my own impulsiveness. I had started this solo cycling trip to prove I was independent, but as I sat on the dusty road, I felt incredibly small.
For two hours, I tried to fix the tire with a flat stone and some old tape. It was a disaster. But then, a rusted white truck pulled over. An elderly man named Yerlan got out. We barely spoke, but he spent forty minutes helping me in the heat. He didn't just fix the tire; he showed me how to listen to the rubber, how to feel the tension of the chain.
I am a very hardworking person and I always try to do everything by myself because I believe that's what successful people do. My school projects, my volunteering at the local shelter—I always took all the responsibility. I thought asking for help was a sign of being weak. But watching Yerlan, I realized that expertise is meant to be shared, not hoarded.
The trip back was hard, but my perspective had shifted. I started thinking about my future career in urban engineering. I realized that building "smart cities" isn't just about technology or independent innovation. It’s about creating systems where people can rely on each other. If we try to fix every "flat tire" in society alone, we will just end up stuck on the side of the road.
In conclusion, this experience was very meaningful for me. It taught me that the seeds of change start with one person, but they only grow when we work together. I am now ready to bring this collaborative spirit to your university and become a great student who helps others.
