In June 2020, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted a tweet that has since become legendary meme lore in crypto circles. Responding to discussions around old-school slang from the satirical /r/buttcoin subreddit β€” a long-running community mocking Bitcoin and crypto hype β€” Vitalik casually shared his recollection of the subreddit's ironic nicknames
This tweet directly referred to Ethereum (ETH) as "etherbutts" β€” essentially framing it as the Ethereum equivalent of "buttcoin," the derogatory term Bitcoin critics used for BTC.

In other words, if buttcoin was the butt of jokes for Bitcoin maximalism skeptics, etherbutts positioned Ethereum as its cheeky, parallel punchline counterpart.
