Who is the man with the stick? Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar
Yahya Ibrahim Sinwar was born in 1962 in Khan Younis refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip, to a family displaced from the city of al-Majdal during the 1948 Nakba.
Israel arrested him in 1988 and sentenced him to multiple life terms. He spent more than 2 decades in prison before his release in 2011 as part of the Wafa al-Ahrar captives exchange deal, under which more than 1000 Palestinian male and female captives were released in exchange for Israeli captive soldier Gilad Shalit.
After his release, he continued his leadership role in Hamas and was elected head of the movement in the Gaza Strip in 2017, before his selection as head of its Political Bureau in August 2024, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh.
His name became associated with Hamas’s leadership during the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on October 7, 2023, which marked a turning point in the conflict
On October 16, 2024, Sinwar was killed fighting during a clash with Israeli soldiers in the Tel al-Sultan area of Rafah, after a manhunt that lasted months.
