“By Allah, my son was what kept me going while I was in prison!”
These were the words of freed Palestinian captive Majdi al-Ayyoubi as he held the clothes he had bought for his child as soon as he learned of his wife’s pregnancy, clothes he never had the chance to dress him in.
Nearly two years ago, the Israeli army surrounded Majdi, his mother, and his wife, who was in the final month of her pregnancy, in al-Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza City.
While Israeli soldiers tortured him during a field interrogation, an officer ordered his mother and pregnant wife to walk north. After they had walked some distance, the Israeli army bombed them, killing both women and his unborn son, who was just days away from birth.
While in prison, and before his release, the Shin Bet officer boasted to Majdi about killing his wife, unborn baby, and mother, using his grief as another form of torture.
Majdi survived Israeli prisons, which he described as graves for the living, only to be killed by Israeli bombing that targeted a vehicle in Gaza City.
He joined his mother, his wife, and the son he never got to see.
